The State Canvassing Board met June 25, 2024 and certified the results of the 2024 Primary Election. This is the final step in the multi-step post-election, canvassing and auditing process that ensures accuracy and election results.
The Los Alamos County (LAC) Clerk’s Office completed the necessary canvassing process to officially certify the results of the 2024 Primary Election, which took place Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
The Canvass Board convened at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 12 in the LAC Municipal Building. Board members included Cameron Counters (Democrat), Rick Reiss (Republican), Lisa Hampton (Decline to State) and Greg White (Republican), along with County Clerk Naomi Maestas, Chief Deputy Clerk Tessa Jo Mascarenas, Elections Manager Victoria Martinez, Senior Deputy Clerk Danielle Miera and Deputy Clerk Michael Redondo. Members of the public present were David Hampton and Kimberly Thomas.
During the session, the Canvass Board meticulously verified the accuracy of election results from early voting, absentee ballots, and election day precincts. Hand-tallied information was also scrutinized for precision.
Following unanimous approval, the Board issued a certificate of canvass, which has been submitted to the New Mexico Secretary of State and other mandated recipients. The total number of ballots cast in the 2024 Primary Election was 2,786. Of these votes, 1507 were cast during early voting, 280 by mail, and 999 on election day. Clerk Maestas emphasized, “Every vote carries the power to shape our communities and make a difference in the lives of those around us. Never underestimate the impact of your voice in the ballot box.”
Clerk Maestas extended gratitude to all candidates for their commitment throughout the election process and acknowledged UNM-Los Alamos, Betty Ehart Senior Center and the League of Women Voters of Los Alamos for their collaboration in voter registration and election information dissemination. She also thanked election poll workers for their dedication from April 16 through election day, ensuring a friendly, professional, and efficient voting experience. Clerk Maestas expressed deep appreciation to county department staff and specifically recognized Chief Deputy Clerk Tessa Jo Mascarenas, Elections Manager Victoria Martinez, Senior Deputy Clerk Danielle Miera and Deputy Clerks Casey Salazar, Allison Collins and Marie Pruitt for their contributions to the election’s success.
