PEEC News:

From ancient seas to modern mesas, Northern New Mexico’s landscape has transformed dramatically over time. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) invites the public to explore this geologic journey in two upcoming fossil-focused programs led by local geology enthusiast Pete Worland, who will reveal how fossils tell the story of the region’s prehistoric past.

At 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, Worland will present “Fossils of Northern New Mexico”, available in-person or online. This program will introduce the region’s remarkable fossil record, from dinosaurs and prehistoric camels to shark teeth and marine invertebrates. The talk is free and open to all, and participants are welcome to attend in person at the Los Alamos Nature Center or join virtually via Zoom.

Next, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, participants can join Worland for a hands-on Fossil Field Trip. This excursion will depart from the Los Alamos Nature Center and include visits to nearby fossil sites, where Worland will share his knowledge in the field. Space for the field trip is limited, and advance registration is required. The cost is $15 per person.

While each program stands alone, the talk will provide a great foundation for those interested in the field trip. Whether interested in attending to learn, explore, or both, PEEC welcomes everyone to join in uncovering the stories of deep time that lie beneath one’s feet.
