Community Lends A Hand In Creating Justice Center Mural

Austin-based artist J Muzacz works on a completed tile piece during a workshop Friday afternoon at Mesa Public Library. This tile will become part of a mosaic mural on the exterior wall of the Justice Center. Muzacz and his team guided community members through the process of creating the tile pieces using their templates. Each participant received a grid to put the glass tiles on and a template to follow regarding where to put the tiles and what colors to use. A total of three workshops were held including one Saturday and the final earlier today at the library. To learn more, visit lacnm.com/mosaic. A ribbon cutting for the mural will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Justice Center on the corner of Trinity Drive and Oppenheimer Drive. Photo by Kirsten Laskey/ladailypost.com

A crowd of people take part in Friday’s workshop in Mesa Public Library to help create a mosaic mural that will be displayed outside the Justice Center. The tiles are made from 60 percent recycled glass. Artist J Muzacz described them as the same ones that are used in pools. He also estimates that about 60,000 tiles will be make up the mural. Muzazc said he and and his team enjoy including the public in the process of creating art. ‘I think it is rewarding for people to have a hand (in art),’ Muzacz said. The mosaic mural at the Justice Center isn’t the only piece of public art that the community is asked to engage in. Art in Public Places Board  Staff Liaison Chelsea Ashcraft is shown Friday at the Mesa Public Library gathering feedback from the community on what artwork should appear at the new Fire Station No. 4. The community can also weigh in through a survey here: https://lacnm.com/FS4_survey. The survey will be open until midnight on June 21. Photo by Kirsten Laskey/ladailypost.com
