Los Alamos Medical Center welcomed Dr. Patrick Dawson to the staff of Northern New Mexico Women’s Health Center (NNMWHC) during a reception Thursday at the Hospital.

Dawson joined the staff in June. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has a special interest in general and high risk obstetrics, non-surgical options when available, and minimally invasive options when surgery is needed.

“Dr. Dawson is outstanding and I love working with him,” said Dr. Barbara Van Eeckhout who works with Dawson at NNMWHC and one of the three doctors now delivering babies at LAMC. “We will continue to grow the OB unit here.”

Dawson earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater, and a medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He completed his residency at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati in 2006.

A stint in the National Service Corps brought Dawson to Gallup. He fell in love with the state and decided to stay. Prior to coming to LAMC, Dawson worked at Southwest Medical Associates and ABQ Health Partners.

He recently moved to Los Alamos with his family. Dawson and his husband Jordan have three boys, Jack, 7, and identical twins Jaiden and Chance, 5. The family loves Los Alamos so far, Dawson said.

Dawson discovered his calling in the delivery room during his OB/GYN rotation as a medical student.

“When I delivered my first baby I knew this was what I wanted to do forever, and every day I’m more sure of it,” he said. “This is what I was meant to do.

The OB/GYN area of LAMC has a new name. It is now the Women’s Health and Childbirth Center.

“The new name is more descriptive and clearly identifies the scope of the services we offer,” said Denise Martinez, RN, director of the Women’s Health and Childbirth Center.

A new work of art displayed in the Center was unveiled at the reception. LAMC Marketing and Community Relations Manager Mary Beth Massen found the statue of a mother and child.

“The statue was purchased from an art dealer in Santa Fe, but there is no provence and it is unsigned,” Massen said. “I saw it, fell in love with it, and knew it was exactly the piece we wanted for the Women’s Health and Childbirth Center.”

“This beautiful mother and child sculpture shows a gentle shared moment of nurturing, as a mother’s love softly embraces a new life,” Martinez said. “We, at Los Alamos Medical Center Women’s Health and Childbirth Center, have embraced this statue as our symbol of dedication to an ancient and honorable service to the mother and child.”
