Flash Flood Watch Underway Through Late Tonight

NWS News:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Watch for a portion of North and Central New Mexico, including the Santa Fe metro area, Jemez Mountains, Guadalupe County,  lower Chama River valley. Lower Rio Grande Valley, Northeast Highlands, northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 9,500 feet/red River, northwest Highlands, Raton Ridge/johnson Mesa, San Francisco River valley, San Juan Mountains, Sandia/manzano Mountains, South Central Highlands, south central mountains.

Also, in the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 9,500 feet, Albuquerque metro area, Central Highlands, East Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Eastern Lincoln County, Estancia Valley, far northeast Highlands. Southwest Mountains, Upper Rio Grande Valley, Upper Tularosa Valley. West Central Highlands, west central mountains and west slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Flash Flood Watch:

  • From noon MDT today through late tonight.
  • An Upper level trough will cross slowly from the north and northwest today and tonight with the best chance for Flash Flooding than northern and central New Mexico has seen in the past few days. With Abundant moisture in place some of the stronger storms will likely produce torrential downpours with rain at rates near 1 inch in Just a half hour.
  • Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent rainfall will be favored for flash flooding. Other vulnerable locations will include steep terrain, urban areas and burn scars. Keep a watchful eye on Arroyos and small streams, and stay out of flooded low water crossings. Monitor the latest forecasts closely and be prepared to take immediate action if a warning or advisory is issued.
