NWS News:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a weather alert through late tonight.

Event:

• Type – Heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding.
• Timing – Late this morning through late tonight.
• Location – Central and western New Mexico. Areas along the Continental Divide and the central mountain chain will be favored for heavy rainfall.

Key Impacts:

• Stronger storms will produce heavy downpours with rain at rates near 1.5 inches per hour
• An overall drier period the past couple weeks will help mitigate the chances for serious flash flooding, however the potential still exists in areas with repeated heavy rainfall
• The potential for flash flooding will be most elevated in urban drainages and near wildfire burn scar areas
• Models forecast storms to merge and stall within the Rio Grande Valley this evening before dissipating early Wednesday morning
• Stronger storms will also have the potential to produce locally strong wind gusts near 55 mph

Overview:

A deep upper level trough tracking slowly eastward toward northern NM will interact with a deep tap of monsoon moisture over the state. Strong forcing for vertical ascent will result in widespread showers and thunderstorms, many with heavy rain.

Moderate confidence in 3 or more flash flooding events through late tonight.
