The next SFI Seminar is 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 in the Collins Conference Room at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe.

Gabriela Barrantes of the University of Costa Rica will speak on “Data Request Adaptation to Protect Individual Privacy.”

Abstract: The problem of preserving individual privacy while giving third parties access to large data sets has been an issue of concern for many years. The advent of big data and large-scale data breaches, however, have highlighted the need for new approaches to this problem. I will describe some of the individual privacy problems faced by organizations that manage user data when they are required to release some data. I will also review the current state of the art for data anonymization. Then, I will describe current research to improve such responses. In our approach, organizations collect and incorporate state information which they then use to refine data collection requests to prevent unnecessarily exposing user data.
