Meet Mary Carol Williams Participating In 2014 Los Alamos Artists Studio Tour

This year’s Los Alamos Artists Studio Tour is Oct. 11-12 and the Los Alamos Daily Post is featuring a “Get to Know Your Artist” series leading up to the annual event.

Each of the 16 artists participating in the tour will be showcased prior to the beginning of the tour to allow our readers an opportunity to learn about them and their work.

Meet Los Alamos artist Mary Carol Williams:

I began taking watercolor classes in 1998 as a hobby for retirement years. Watercolor is a slow teacher and I am still learning its nuances and its moods. I became captivated by the transparency of watercolor and its tendency to produce delightful surprises. It is an addictive, evolving pursuit and fascinating fun.

Watercolor defies my attempts to control it and teaches me both patience and persistence. It increases my ability to see and appreciate my everyday surroundings and the wonderfully beautiful state of New Mexico. The photographs I take for painting ideas have turn into another art form for me to explore.

Watercolor and photography challenge me to capture my emotional response to a scene accurately and attempt to share it with others. Trying to portray the heart of the people and the spirit of the land is humbling yet stimulating for me.

The wonderful mix of cultures, the spontaneity of the people, and the atmosphere of the arts in northern New Mexico opens many avenues for exploration and expression.

An added benefit is the exposure to new media and wonderful other artists and art organizations. My life is richer, more creative, and broader due to the wonderful associations that art has opened for me.
