Hilltalkers Win At Eldorado High School Speech & Debate Tournament In Albuquerque

The Los Alamos High School Hilltalkers had an outstanding beginning to their Speech and Debate year Sept. 26-27 at the Eldorado High School Invitational. 

Eighteen New Mexico schools competed and the Hilltalkers earned first place in overall team standings at the competition. 

The Los Alamos Middle School Hawktalkers also had a strong showing at the tournament. Both teams had numerous students competing in semi-final and final rounds.

Varsity Public Forum Debate
  • Sincheng Huang/Colin Wiburn–1st place
  • Mo van de Sompel/Will Sidley-Parker–2nd place
  • Angela Feng/Jenny Wang–3rd place
Novice Public Forum Debate
  • Sarah Shipley/Sophia Li–2nd place
  • Michelle Yang/Irene Kwon–3rd place
Varsity Policy Debate
  • Harrison William/Colin Redman–2nd place
  • Ben Duan/Jimmy Sinnis–3rd place
  • Sudeep Dasari/Ani Nadiga–3rd place
Original Oratory
  • Rebecca Cai–1st place
  • Irene Gerrish–2nd place
  • Sincheng Huang–3rd place
Dramatic Interpretation
  • Jenny Wang–3rd place
Expository Speaking
  • Wilbur Wang–1st place
International Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Nate Delgado–2nd place
Recognition goes out to the coaching of Hilltalkers new assistant coach Christine Engelbrecht and two alumni coaches Ryan Adams ’07 and Josh Dolin ’10. They and chaperones Liz Cooper (Colin Redman’s mom) and Mrs. Sidley-Parker did an outstanding job getting everyone to the tournament and pitching in with judging.  
 
Many of the winning high school students on the Hilltalkers team started out in Sherri Bublitz’s LAMS Hawktalker Speech & Debate Program, cementing the importance that the middle school speech and debate program be sufficiently funded.
