A talk on “Throwing Down the Gauntlet to the Next Generation of Nuclear Stewards: The Enduring Nuclear Legacy — A Second Look” will be given by national security consultant Jack Jekowski at an open meeting of the Los Alamos Committee on Arms Control and International Security at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Lounge at the Education Building of the United Church, 2525 Canyon Road in Los Alamos.
Jekowski speaker will explore the challenges that lie ahead for the next generation of nuclear stewards, cast in the context of current events that are shaping the future of the nuclear world, including:
- The most recent recommendations from Congressionally-mandated panels looking at the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) and DOE’s National Laboratories;
- The continuing efforts by the Obama Administration to improve global nuclear security and reduce the reliance on nuclear stockpiles;
- The deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and Russia and the Nuclear Weapons States’ stockpile modernization programs;
- The diplomatic efforts to resolve the problematic Iranian situation; and
- The challenges that lie ahead for nuclear power as the world continues to deal with the repercussions of the Fukushima nuclear incident.
Jekowski is a founding principal partner with Innovative Technology Partnerships, LLC. (ITP), a high technology consulting company headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico. ITP has been supporting national security programs in the Department of Energy, and the National Laboratories, as well as other federal agencies since its incorporation in 1997. He is retired from a 34-year career in the Department of Energy contractor community, having served as a senior manager for EG&G, Inc. and Honeywell, managing large research and technical operations in Los Alamos and Albuquerque, Kansas City, Mo., and Las Vegas, Nev. Jekowski’s professional engagement includes serving as the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee for the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM), and is a contributing editor to the Journal of Nuclear Materials Management (JNMM), authoring a column each quarter entitled “Taking the Long View in a Time of Great Uncertainty”.
