SPORTS News:

Los Alamos High School swimmers and divers competed Jan. 16-17 at the 17th Annual Albuquerque Academy Invitational meet.

This prestigious meet is the largest high school meet in the state, with 448 athletes representing teams from all over New Mexico, as well as from Texas and Colorado.

The girls’ team finished second out of 19 teams with 668 points to Academy’s 859. The boys’ team finished third out of 21 teams with 395 points in a close, 3-way struggle with Cleveland (407) and Rio Rancho (394 points). The host team ran away with the boys’ title with 1,056 points, behind a large and talented squad.

The Hilltoppers captured three individual titles in the 24-event competition. Senior Michael Moore won the 200 and 500 freestyles (1:47.61/4:55.46), and his sister, sophomore Jessica Moore, touched first in her specialty, the 100 breast (1:10.45). Her time moves her to 9th on the All-Time Hilltoppers list for the event, while Michael’s 200 free clocking puts him 10th on the All-Time Performers list.

Five more girls, one from each class, qualified for the state high school championships in individual events: sophomore Jesse Liechty (200 Individual Medley), freshman Alana Goodwin (200 Individual Medley), junior Sydney Schoonover (50 freestyle), 8th-grader Jillian Bennett (100 breaststroke), and senior Annika Bronkhurst (1 meter dive.)

Coach Keith Greene’s divers racked up big points for the girls’ team, with veteran senior Madeleine Le Scouarnec leading the way for the Toppers.

Several rookie swimmers and underclassmen were called into action when veterans came down with flu or injuries. Freshmen Carson Brewer, Mykayla Hanawalt, and Caleb Hatler;  soph Neil Wilkerson, and junior Nate Scrimshaw responded with best-ever times.

The Hilltoppers have one more tune-up invitational meet before they host the district meet at Walkup Pool Feb. 14. The Topper boys’ and girls’ teams are both defending district champions.

The state meet is Feb. 20-21 at Albuquerque Academy.
