BANDELIER News:
In 2016, Bandelier National Monument will mark its 100th anniversary, and artists are invited to submit entries for a logo for the celebration. The logo will be used on many centennial items, as well as on the Bandelier Annual Pass for 2016
“This is an opportunity for all who love Bandelier to be an integral part of the centennial celebration,” Superintendent Jason Lott said. “The image will appear on passes, posters, and many other places, and be seen by thousands of people.”
Entries must be directly related to Bandelier National Monument, 2D, visually strong, and designed to be usable at sizes from about 1″ to poster and banner size. Images must be in proportion to fit on the park annual pass, which is 2″ x 3″, and can be either landscape or portrait orientation. Entries cannot be photographs. The words Bandelier National Monument Centennial 1916-2016 should appear in or along the edge of the design. Everyone is invited to enter, including National Park Service employees and others related to Bandelier or other parks, but relatives of entrants will not be allowed to help with judging.
Besides having their image used throughout the Centennial celebration, the winning artist will receive an America the Beautiful pass, which provides free admission to federal recreation areas throughout the country, and a DVD of the park movie, “This Place Knows Us”, as well as recognition on the park website, Facebook, a press release, and elsewhere.
Artists who are planning to create artwork for the contest are invited to make a free visit to the park to freshen their memories and provide inspiration. They should come into the Visitor Center during regular hours (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week) and contact the rangers so their fee for that day can be waived. The waiver also covers others who may come with them that day in the same vehicle.
Digital copies or photos of each entry, in JPEG format at a minimum of 2000×3000, should be submitted by email to: chris_judson@nps.gov. Images must be in sharp focus and show the image clearly. These entries will be used for judging, which will be done by members of the local community. Entries must be received on or before March 22, for judging later that week, and the winner will be notified during the first week in April. The winning image will become property of the National Park Service, which means it will become public domain, so the artist will not retain copyright.
On April 18, participants and the public are invited to the theater at the Bandelier Visitor Center at 4:30 p.m. for a presentation of all the entries, and the winner will be revealed at that time. Non-winning images will be shown on that day only and then deleted from park files, and all rights for those images will remain with the artists.
