Family Strengths Network is providing an assortment of upcoming events:

Early Childhood Parenting Class (age 0-4)

Time: 9:30 – 11 a.m.

Dates: Mondays and Fridays, Oct. 19, 23, 26, 30 and Nov. 2
Instructor: Karen Brown
Cost: $40/individual or couple. Financial aid available, please ask!
Child Care: Available on-site at no extra cost. Must be requested at least one week in advance.

Learn to respond to temper tantrums, set boundaries, and establish healthy control without resorting to anger, threats, nagging, or exhausting power struggles.

We will discuss putting an end to misbehavior in public, smoothing out daily routines, and calming sibling battles. Love & Logic is an evidence-based class. There will be time built into class to meet other parents and learn what has worked and hasn’t worked for them.

Karen Brown is a professional doula and the co-facilitator of Birth talk. Her background also includes serving as an environmental scientist supporting global climate change research for several Universities and the Lab. She is the mother of three children under seven years old.

Infant and Child CPR and First Aid

Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 17

Learn basic infant and child CPR and first aid so you can be calmer and more prepared in the event of an emergency.

Guiding Good Choices

Time: 8:15 – 10:30 a.m.

Dates: Saturdays, Oct. 17 – November 14 (held during LAHS Saturday School)
Instructor: Michelangelo Lobato
Cost: Free, thanks to the DWI Planning Council
Location: Los Alamos High School in the Speech Theater

This class is for all parents of teens. Raise resilient youth who make responsible choices. In this class, we will discuss strengthening family bonds, managing family conflict and developing clear guidelines and expectations for behavior.

Polish your communication skills to help you discuss important issues with your teen, including risk-taking behaviors such as use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and sexual activity. Michelangelo is the former Director of the Teen Center and current counselor at Chamisa Elementary. He has a Masters Degree in counseling and has been working with youth and families for more than ten years. This class is sponsored by the DWI Planning Council.

Great manners are the key to your child’s current and future successes. Etiquette Factory will assist your child in developing character, skills, etiquette, presentation and communication skills that will enable them to reach their full life potential. Instructor: Susan Williams is a Certified Professional Coach and Etiquette Educator. Her passion is to assist children in developing character, etiquette and life skills to assist them in their successful future.

For Grades 1st – 4th

Time: 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Place: Family Strengths Network

Instructor: Peggy Pendergast has been a Los Alamos resident for over 40 years, worked for LAPS as an instructional assistant and was the Youth Activities Director for eight years. She has a love of etiquette and wishes to share that love with the community.

Special Saturdays: Rocking Climbing at the Family Y

Time: 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Dates: Oct. 31
Coordinator: Brianne Fanning
Cost: $10/session. Financial aid available – please ask!
Registration: Please call for information.
Ages Served: Grades K -12

Special Saturdays is for children with developmental or physical special needs. The program provides fun activities for kids and a break for parents.

Each session includes activities and snacks. Enrollment is limited. Different Saturdays may be appropriate for different children. FSN will determine children’s eligibility for the program. Please call to see if this program is right for you.
