WASHINGTON D.C.  Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (CHR), issued the following statement in support of the nomination of Acting Secretary of Education John King to be Secretary of Education:

“We applaud the President for nominating Acting Secretary King to fill out the remainder of his term as the permanent Secretary of Education. Acting Secretary King is a reliable steward of this administration’s legacy of strong civil rights enforcement and for ensuring that the department takes an active role in advancing educational equity for all students.

“As the department uses its important and vital role to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act, Acting Secretary King is clearly best positioned to ensure that vulnerable students and communities have a seat at the decision-making table and that the Office for Civil Rights continues its good work to enforce civil rights laws nationwide. Having this continuity for the remainder of the Obama administration will be invaluable and we urge the Senate to swiftly confirm Acting Secretary King.”
