CIR News:
The public is invited to attend the High School Academic WorldQuest Competition 2016 Thursday, Feb. 25, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Jemez Room at Santa Fe Community College, 6401 Richards Ave.
Come and play along as local students compete for a chance to travel (all expenses paid by the Center For International Relations – CIR) on to the national competition April 23 in Washington, D.C.
The Academic WorldQuest is produced by World Affairs Councils of America (WACA). It is a national quiz bowl competition designed to strengthen and enlarge the factual knowledge base for high school students.
The cost for adults is $15 and includes a breakfast burrito and pizza lunch.
Register by Tuesday, Feb. 23 to attend this event.
The CIR Student/Faculty Committee is organizing the local competition, and has to date, four teams from two schools scheduled to compete. This is a quality academic competition, which has grown and matured in the past 10 years of competition. This is the first year that Santa Fe CIR has competed.
WACA has identified the 2016 topics as:
- NATO
- Asia Matters for America
- International Trade and Finance
- Sultanate of Oman
- Privacy in the Digital Age
- The Arctic
- Food Security
- Organization of American States
- Great Decisions
- Current Events
WACA provides 100 multiple choice questions, which are derived from readings also identified by WACA and provided to the Santa Fe high schools. The readings are all from quality primary sources, e.g. Council on Foreign Relations, New York Times, The World Bank, and The BBC.
