Sharon Stover
POLITICAL News:
Sharon Stover of Los Alamos filed by proxy today at the Secretary of State’s Office in Santa Fe for the Dist. 43 House seat.
Stover, a republican, ends her position as Los Alamos County Clerk Dec. 31. She also serves as president of the New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC), a term that also ends Dec. 31.
Stover issued the following statement about her desire to serve in the New Mexico Legislature:
I am wholeheartedly ready to take the next step in public service, and would be honored to serve as State Representative for District 43. Born and raised in the Pojoaque Valley, and having lived in Los Alamos for the past 33 years, I have grown to love and value our broader District community.
I have been very active in the Los Alamos community with nearly nine years of service on the County Council, including three years as Council Chair, and currently serve as the County Clerk. In addition, I have initiated and helped develop several ongoing programs including the Los Alamos Schools Foundation, Leadership Los Alamos, the Los Alamos YMCA Red and Black Ball, History Is Here for the Los Alamos Historical Society, and way back when our kids were in elementary school, started the Piñon crossing guard program.
At present, I also serve as President of the New Mexico Association of Counties. In this role, I will be the first NMAC to travel to and meet with, along with our Executive Director, each of New Mexico’s County Commissions/Councils in their public venues. Visiting our 33 counties has been informative and empowering as I have heard first-hand the issues facing the counties of New Mexico. Issues like more and better jobs, a universal need for improved roads, and the pressure of jail costs. As a state, New Mexico also struggles with the high cost of health care and Medicaid, as well as making sure we provide quality education for our children.
We are truly blessed to live in beautiful Northern New Mexico and to serve our culturally diverse and enchanted State. It is with this sense of blessing and commitment that I want to do more to make New Mexico an even better place to live for our families, kids, and generations to come. I intend to roll up my sleeves and dig into the issues that affect our families, neighborhoods, and communities.
In conclusion, I am excited about running for a State office as I enjoy campaigning and look forward to visiting my friends and neighbors in District 43.
Editor’s Note: Stover is running against Democratic incumbent Stephanie Garcia Richard.
