I would like to echo the concern expressed in recent letters about dogs that are not under control by their owners, here, here and here. People with dogs need to understand that not everybody likes or wants to be approached by a dog, whether it is on a leash or not, or by a rabid dog barking menacingly from the other side of a patchy fence.
We should all remember that dogs are dogs, they are not people, and they will behave like dogs. My family and I were once on a walk around our neighborhood. Our 3-year-old son was sitting in his stroller, eating a slice of pizza. As we walked down the sidewalk, a woman with her four dogs on leashes was walking toward us. She simply let her dogs get near us, and as soon as they noticed that our son was eating pizza, the dogs, racing each other, jumped on him and bit it out of his hand, biting him. Needless to say our son was hurt, though no lasting harm was done, and terrified! The woman owner of the dogs laughed it off like her dogs were being mischievous and cute.
Dog owners should be aware that not everybody shares their feelings for their own dogs, no matter how friendly and cute they may seem to them.
