Letter To The Editor: Let’s Support The Amenities That Make Our Community Better For Everyone!

As Recreation Bond ballots are due tomorrow, we want to remind everyone to get their ballots in and encourage you to vote “Yes” on the bond.

Those opposed to the bond seem to have two main arguments against it:

  • Need: they state there is not a need for the projects that are proposed; and
  • Cost: our taxes and the cost are too high.

We feel that both arguments are incorrect as we look to the future of our community. As a parent, we can say there is definitely a need!! When we first moved to Los Alamos almost 25 years ago, we were surprised that more of the capital improvements were not more focused on children or families. The pool is a good example.

Although the pool does an excellent job of trying to be multi-use, it was never meant to meet all needs. The pool was, and is not, young child friendly as there is no shallow end for them to stand and the temperature is generally kept at lower levels to accommodate lane swimming. While there are community outdoor pools, the assessments are expensive and young families may not be able to afford to pay for only 3 months of swimming time. We need an indoor, family friendly pool!

In our involvement with club sports for our children, we saw how precious gym space is in our town and that often the children must practice late at night in facilities that may not best accommodate their sport. Diving for a volleyball on an elementary cafeteria/gym floor (vinyl tile over cement) can cause injuries and children often practiced at 9 p.m., because that was the only time available to get space. We have friends whose children are in hockey and their limitations are even greater. Without going through every project to discuss the merits, the fact remains that there is much need for the additional facilities. This bond provides many projects for families that have been sorely missing over the years.

Regarding cost, the property taxes in Los Alamos are much lower compared to other areas in the nation. Our daughter’s significant other recently purchased a small starter home in foreclosure in Kalamazoo, MI. The house was $60,000 and they pay $2,200/year in taxes. For a $300,000 house, that would be $11,000/year! Conversely, based upon our rate, the taxes on a $300,000 house in Los Alamos are approx. $1,600/year. It is amazing that we get as many services and improvements for the small amount we pay in our community. An extra $180/year is well worth the benefits.

We are a diverse community with many interests and age groups and this bond has projects that reach a sizable percentage of our citizens. It makes no sense to pit one recreational group against another in a scramble for funding. All the projects are investments in our town, and by voting yes, we support the amenities that make our community better for everyone!

Thank you.
