NMDOT News:SANTA FE ― Today, Gov. Susana Martinez announced that one of the state’s top 10 DWI fugitives, Maria Murray, is now behind bars.
Since 2003, Murray has been arrested for five DWIs, including aggravated DWI. She has been fleeing justice since October 2016 and was captured while on parole for her fifth DWI offense.
“Too many New Mexicans have died on our roads and highways because someone made the destructive choice to drink and drive,” Martinez said. “We will continue to everything we can to put these dangerous criminals back behind bars where they belong.”
The governor has made fighting DWI one of her administration’s top priorities. The arrest comes on the heels of the governor unveiling a new hard-hitting ad campaign to end DWI.
“With each offender that we get off our roads we make New Mexico a safer place,” NMCD Cabinet Secretary David Jablonski said. “We will continue to prioritize working with other law enforcement agencies in finding these offenders.”
The “Top 10 List” of DWI absconders in the state is part of an initiative enacted by Martinez to crackdown on repeat offender absconders. The top 10 DWI absconders are listed on the ENDWI website, along with absconders who have been captured. This is just one of the many initiatives spearheaded by Governor Martinez to combat drunk driving.
“Keeping New Mexico families safe on New Mexico roads will always be a priority for our Department and we couldn’t do it without law enforcement’s hard work to get these offenders back behind bars where they belong,” NMDOT Deputy Cabinet Secretary Loren Hatch said. “It is so important that everyone make the decision not to drink and drive.”
