STAFF REPORT:

About 20 people strapped on their bicycle helmets and climbed on their bikes Thursday to take part in Los Alamos County’s community bike ride.

The 3-mile ride was originally scheduled for May 19 but needed to be rescheduled due to the weather. The new date coincided with the 12th Annual National Dump the Pump Day. Additionally, the community bike ride followed on the heels of the County’s presentation during its work session Tuesday to the County Council of its re-developed bicycle plan.

County Engineer Eric Martinez said County Council will consider adopting the plan during its June 27 meeting. Martinez said hosting the community bike ride the same day as National Dump the Pump Day, “helps facilitate bicycles as a widely used form of transportation”.

Members of the Los Alamos Fire Department and Los Alamos Police Department bike patrols led the ride through town. After the ride, free hot dogs, chips and refreshments were served. Staff and a bus from Atomic City Transit demonstrated use of bus mounted bike racks along with information promoting safe cycling.

A raffle also was held at the lunch time event for a 26” Roadmaster Mountain Bike donated by Wal-Mart, and adult bike helmets donated by the Los Alamos Heart Council.
