POLITICAL News:
SANTA FE — Progressive Democratic candidate for governor of New Mexico, Peter DeBenedittis, will be in Los Alamos at 6 p.m. Monday at The Karen Wray Gallery, 1247 Central Ave., Suite D2. All are welcome.
The candidate is eager to meet Los Alamos residents and to hear their ideas on how New Mexico’s economy, education, and health care systems can be brought from being “worst to first.”
Peter DeBenedittis has lived in Santa Fe since 1995 and has worked for 20 years teaching youth alcohol prevention at schools across New Mexico. For the past 2-1/2 years, he’s volunteered as director of Alcohol Taxes Save Lives and Money.
Though DeBenedittis has never held political office, he has run successful gubernatorial campaigns overseas. He believes that being a political outsider is an advantage, since he doesn’t owe millions of dollars in favors to corporate donors – and, in fact, will not accept corporate donations to his campaign.
According to DeBenedittis, “I called my campaign People First because it puts the needs of everyday New Mexicans before the selfish interests that have bought off many politicians.” He adds, “Let’s face it, New Mexico is at the bottom in just about everything — poverty, jobs, education, hunger. If we keep voting for the same old, same old, we’re going to keep getting the same old, same old.”
DeBenedittis’ People First Campaign advocates five major policy initiatives that will immediately help everyday New Mexicans:
- Health care for all New Mexicans
- Early childhood education statewide
- Living wages
- Creating a public state bank
- 100 percent renewable energy
