By DELIA CRUZ-MURPHYI am sure concerned citizens in Los Alamos are well aware of the growing concern regarding the position of the Sheriff. It is probably in the best interest of the people in the community to know where to find where the duties of the Sheriff are outlined. They are listed in Los Alamos County Code of Ordinances, Part I – Charter, Article III, Section 304.4:
It also is in the best interest of the community to understand that it is not up to the Sheriff to investigate suspected corruption of a local Police Department, that falls to the FBI.

The National Guard is called out for very specific reasons:
- “The Guard responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counter drug efforts, reconstruction missions and more. Any state governor or the President of the United States can call on the Guard in a moment’s notice” (https://www.nationalguard.com/guard-faqs#faq-5381).
The banter going on in the community indicates that the issue of the Sheriff, his roles/responsibilities, and what he is due is a pressing issue. I understand people are expressing their opinions which is perfectly acceptable, and is their right. In the future members of the Community are going to be asked to vote on whatever Amendments are going to be made to the Los Alamos Codes. It is the responsibility of each member of the community to educate themselves on the topic of each ballot.
I am not taking sides, merely providing the source material for members of the Community to base their vote on.
