COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County invites residents to join the County Council and Community Services Department (CSD) in honoring long-time concert producer Russ Gordon for “Russ Gordon Day” Friday, Sept. 8. Gordon is being recognized for his thousands of hours and 28 years of service dedicated to bringing great musical acts to Los Alamos. The County has contracted with Gordon annually to help produce the free Summer Concert Series. Gordon will be retiring and moving out of state and the Sept. 8 concert will be his final concert. Details about activities are outlined below:
Proclamation for Russ Gordon Day. The Council will present a special proclamation to Russ Gordon at their meetingat 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Council Chambers, honoring Gordon with his own special day Sept. 8. Residents are invited to attend the meeting.
“Thank You Russ” – a Special Card Collection for concert night. Starting Monday, August 28, fans can download a thank-you card on the County’s website at www.losalamosnm.us (under the front page Recent News tab) in advance, or, pick up and fill out a thank-you card at the concert Sept. 8 by visiting the CSD table. They will be collecting and displaying the cards to present to Gordon at intermission. Community members are especially encouraged to share their memories of their favorite bands or other concert memories on the cards for Gordon to enjoy reading after the concert.
“28 years” of Summer Concerts – Call for Community Photos. Residents with old photos from past concerts – especially if they picture Russ Gordon – are asked to email JPEG files to lacmanager@lacnm.us or hashtag them (to be visible to the County, they must have a Public profile setting) on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtags #MakeAFussOverRuss or #gr8musicfor28years. Photos should be emailed or tagged on social media no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6 so the County has time to gather up and compile them into a slide show that will run Sept. 8, which is the last Friday Night Concert for 2017.
Community Help with “Russ Gordon Day” Friday, Sept. 8 – before the Final Concert. Individuals, businesses and organizations are asked to join in the celebration and its theme of “Thanks for the Musical Memories” during the hours leading up to the last show Gordon will host at 7 p.m. on the concert stage. Residents and businesses are asked to get creative over the next two weeks in sponsoring or promoting ideas for Russ Gordon Day. Examples could include displaying colorful “Thanks for the Musical Memories, Russ Gordon!” posters in windows of local businesses or homes, businesses offering a special drink, promotional product or food item named after Gordon Sept. 8, or inviting Gordon for farewell parties at local establishments or community parks earlier in the day Sept. 8. Participants who decide to “Make a Fuss Over Russ” are asked to post photos with Russ enjoying his day to social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtags #MakeAFussOverRuss and #gr8musicfor28years (note: to be visible to the County for later sharing out to recap the day’s events, they must have a Public profile setting)
A Note about Future Concerts. Although it will be Gordon’s final concert Sept. 8, the County intends to issue a Request for Proposals for another company to take over concert production in order to continue the popular summer concerts next year. The concert draws in thousands of residents and visitors and is an important feature in the County’s tourism and marketing plans.
