By WENDEE BRUNISHFriends of the Shelter (FOS) would like to extend a huge thank you to the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse (LASP) for inviting us to co-host the August Pancake breakfast at the Posse Lodge.
Several enthusiastic FOS volunteers joined the very experienced (and patient) LASP folks who showed us the ropes and kept everything running smoothly. The breakfast was a big success, and we thank all of the nearly 400 folks that turned out to enjoy the wonderful food that was provided. It was great to see seniors, couples, and families with kids of all ages enjoying the breakfast and the company.
FOS will use the monies raised to fund our important missions, which include our spay/neuter program, our foster program for young kittens and puppies, our vet care program for homeless cats and dogs, and our catastrophic injury/illness program that provides assistance with major veterinary expenses for low-income pet owners.
In conjunction with our veterinary clinic partners in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and the Espanola Valley, we have funded over 700 spay/neuter surgeries over the past couple of years, preventing many litters of unwanted puppies and kittens in our area. We have also provided assistance with veterinary care for over 300 homeless, newly adopted, and beloved family pets. This care includes supportive care for puppies with parvovirus and other diseases, treatment for feline respiratory viruses and canine heartworm, surgery for serious injuries from being hit by a car or attacked by other animals, and dental surgery which is a serious systemic health threat for both cats and dogs.
We continue to work with other private rescues in New Mexico to extend our reach to many impoverished communities where funds for spay/neuter and veterinary care are beyond the means of many caring pet owners.
We thank our many partners, the LASP, and the citizens of Los Alamos for supporting our work to reduce animal suffering, improve animal welfare, and reduce the number of unwanted pets throughout Northern New Mexico.
