LIBRARY News:

The Los Alamos/Japan Project exhibition in the Upstairs Art Gallery at Mesa Public Library, which will be on display through Nov. 21, will celebrate its opening with a reception 4-6 p.m. today.

This exhibit at the Mesa Public Library tells the ongoing story of the Los Alamos/Japan Project—an expansive, long-term project to develop dialogue with international museum colleagues and pursue understanding between Los Alamos, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

Founded by Los Alamos History Museum Director Judith Stauber, the Los Alamos Japan Project is building a bridge of understanding between Los Alamos History Museum, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.

This is not the first exhibit chronicling the project- the first was at the Los Alamos History Museum last spring- but as the project continues to evolve, panels have been added to reflect the latest progress. Two major events took place this summer.

First, a poetry reading by Los Alamos native Allison Cobb and art installation by Hiroshima native Yukio Kawano, took place July 16 in Fuller Lodge. That was followed by the visit by Stauber and Historical Society board member Michael Redondo to Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the anniversary of the first atomic bombs being dropped on those cities.

While in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Stauber and Redondo met with officials and Stauber’s counterparts at the museums, and delivered more than 1,000 origami cranes made by people in Los Alamos.

The exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours at 2400 Central Ave., Los Alamos. For more information about Library happenings, call 595.662.8250 or visit the events calendar at www.losalamoslibrary.org.
