The students of Aspen Elementary School found an unusual way to celebrate Tuesday the collection of 1,200 books and $600 in shipping fees to make a library for Kamayoge Primary School on Mfangano Island, Kenya, Africa.

Trey Pereyra, a much-loved instructional assistant, volunteered to have his head shaved if the students met their goal (1,000 books and $500) – and indeed they beat their goal by 200 books and $100! So the entire school spent 20 minutes outside on the playground last Tuesday afternoon while Trey had his lovely locks sheared by Luna Serrano, RaeAnn Harp, and Allison Washburn, Aspen staff members and leaders of the school’s K-Kids Club, who sponsored the book drive and fund-raisers.

Students were heard chanting “Make him bald!” as chunks of Trey’s hair fell to the ground around his feet! While most kids enjoyed the festivities, one small girl was seen with tears in her eyes wondering why Mr. Trey would cut off all his beautiful hair!

Books have been collected at all the schools in the district over the past few months, fundraisers held, and subsequently 12 libraries of 1,200 books each are being sent to Kenyan schools very soon.

A huge send-off for the libraries is 3-5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Sullivan Field. The community is welcome to attend. The approximately 14,400 books will be loaded into a U-Haul truck and driven to New Orleans, LA, where they will be loaded onto a freighter and shipped to the port of Mombasa, Kenya. There will be a number of Los Alamos citizens traveling to Kenya next June to aid in the distribution of the books.
