  • New Mexicans will rally to honor the economic contributions of immigrants and protest detentions and deportations

SANTA FE – Immigrant families, workers and youth, as well as labor, faith and civil rights leaders from across New Mexico, will hold a rally beginning at noon Monday outside the State Capitol in Santa Fe to recognize the vital contributions immigrants make to the state and speak out against the devastating impact that new federal policies and increased immigration enforcement have on local communities.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has ramped up enforcement measures aimed at targeting, detaining and deporting immigrant families, workers and youth. Apprehensions and detentions have increased by 40 percent since last year.

The rally is part of Immigrant Day of Action, an annual event organized by Somos Un Pueblo Unido in partnership with the New Mexico Federal of Labor – AFL-CIO. It is also part of a Moral Monday series and the “We Are All America” national week of action, a campaign that aims to uphold the nation’s commitment to welcoming immigrants and refugees.
