Local photographer Corrina Hughes’ pictures of natural landscapes often appear as Daily Postcards in the Los Alamos Daily Post website and her efforts in capturing the local flora and fauna have earned Hughes recognition as the quarterly winner of the Daily Postcard contest.

This is not the first time Hughes has earned this title, she also won the photo contest earlier in 2017. Her photo of golden Aspen leaves cinched the second win.

Hughes said she was “definitely surprised” that she won a second time.

The photo contest was started when Los Alamos residents Robert and Ann Wells established a fund at the Los Alamos Arts Council. The purpose of the fund is to award a prize of $100 to the photographer who submits the best photo of the quarter published in the Los Alamos Daily Post. Three independent judges select the quarterly winner without knowing the names of the entrants.

Hughes said she plans to use her winnings towards a photography calendar the Northern New Mexico Gardeners, which she is a member of, are developing next year.

TK Thompson, one of the judges, said all the entries were good but “what impressed us with this image (Hughes’ photo) was that everything was done right – focus, exposure, composition, color, framing, vision, etc. There were no distracting elements in the image – everything worked well to support the theme of the photograph.”

Hughes has been behind the camera lens for 20 years. She has taken numerous pictures of her children but since her family moved to Los Alamos, Hughes said she has loved to photograph landscapes.

She said photography is “a relaxing hobby and there are so many talented photographers up here and the landscape is generous in the art and opportunities it provides us.”
