LAPS News:

The construction and remodeling of Barranca Mesa Elementary School is well under way, on budget and on schedule.

This project is managed by Los Alamos Public Schools, and the main construction contractor is Bradbury Stamm, who has been in business for more than 90 years.

Los Alamos Public Schools has allocated $10 million in bond funds for reconstruction at Barranca and recently won an award of $8.8 million from the Public School Capital Outlay Council, which will fill out the total amount needed to complete the project.

The construction aspect of the project includes a brand new two-story building for grades 1-6, as well as a new cafeteria. There also will be a new bus lane in place by the time the project is complete in the summer of 2020.

Remodeling will take place in the 200 wing, which houses administration, art, music and the computer lab. The admin area and former pre-school area will receive major modifications, including a new lobby which will give the school a single point of entry for enhanced security. The former pre-school area will be redesigned for physical therapy and occupational therapy services.

The 100 building next to the pool also will be completely remodeled to become the early childhood center, which includes pre-school and kindergarten. A new early childhood playground is included in these plans.

Part of the remodeling process includes installing life safety upgrades like a fire sprinkler system campus wide, a fire alarm and an intrusion alarm.

According to Assistant Facilities Coordinator Herb McLean, “Below grade plumbing rough-in is almost complete, and electrical under slab rough-in has begun. Footings and stem walls are almost complete, and steel arrives the week of Oct. 15.”
