NMDP News:SANTA FE ― Rep. Joseph Sanchez (D-Alcalde) introduced House Bill 16 in the House of Representatives.
House Bill 16 would require the state’s Department of Public Safety to share pertinent missing persons information with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, created by the United States Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice.
“One of my constituents has been deeply impacted by this issue,” Rep. Joseph Sanchez said. “When his brother went missing, he found that our state’s missing persons information is not connected with the federal missing persons system. This bill is named in his brother’s honor, and I wanted to sponsor this important bill on behalf of the families across the state who have had deep, personal connections with this issue in the hopes that they can get a sense of closure,” he said.
The “Mark Daniel Aguilar Information Sharing Requirement” would ensure a more thorough and connected process in helping to find missing persons. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons system, 600,000 persons go missing in the United States every year.
