The Los Alamos Middle School MathCounts team took first place in the 2019 MathCounts State competition Saturday at UNM in Albuquerque.

LAMS sent a team of four Mathletes to compete, as well as four additional Mathletes. The team members were Charles Cai, Sonja Ebey, Isaac Gao and Alex Livescu. The four additional competitors were Minhtet Htoon, Daniel Kim, Rebecca Li and Nicholas Witkowski.

In the individual competition Cai placed first, Livescu placed second, Ebey placed fifth and Gao placed seventh.

Cai and Livescu will compete on the New Mexico State team in the National MathCounts Competition May 11-14 in Orlando, Fla. Ebey is the alternate team member.

In the Jeopardy-style Countdown Round, Gao took second place and Ebey took third place.

LAMS MathCounts coaches are Phuong Nguyen, Jane Lataille and Do Vo. Since Los Alamos Middle School team placed first, they will coach the New Mexico State team to compete at the National MathCounts Competition.
