Ms. Bonner, I’m a firm believer in every person having their own opinion, but you’ve missed several facts and bits of scripture that are extremely important that are very relevant to your letter.
1. Not every person in Los Alamos or this country is Christian. I personally know people who are Christian (of various denominations), Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Mormon/LDS, Jehovah’s Witness, Hindu, Sikh, Agnostic, and Atheist. Religion is an extremely personal thing and of all the people I know, not a single one thinks their religious beliefs are wrong while others are right — if they did, they’d probably change faiths. For this reason, I can’t count myself amongst the Christians because I am not strong enough in my own beliefs to tell all of those others they’re wrong — so there goes that whole first commandment thing.
2. Abortion (or baby killing) has been legal in the United States for a very long time. I’ve personally known women who have had to make the choice to have an abortion when neither they nor the child would survive. It’s my opinion that this shouldn’t be up to the government — it should be a choice between a woman and her doctor and no man sitting in another state should have any say whatsoever. Based on your post, you obviously believe differently and I’m OK with that.
3. While I’m “straight”, I personally have friends who are straight, bisexual, pan sexual, and gay/lesbian, Did I leave anyone out? I think I know someone of every sexual orientation and have no problems with any of them. Again, my opinion, but the government should not be interfering with what happens between 2 (or more) consenting adults — it’s simply none of their business. There are actually states that did (and may still do) have laws that there’s only one legal sexual position and that sex is STRICTLY for purposes of procreation and I really feel sorry for those that do — they’re missing a lot of fun.
4. Your discussion with regards to men using womens restrooms and such I’m guessing is referring to transgenders. Same as above, yes, I have a friend who is transgender and I know of at least one other locally. So, I’m going to pose a question for you, and yes, I’m being serious. You believe in God and therefor that all of Gods children are created in his image and a man should be a man and a woman should be a woman and that’s all there is to it, correct? So what about someone who is born a hermaphrodite (someone with both genders)? Which bathroom should they use? Since God occasionally gets it “wrong” there, isn’t it possible that sometimes he gets it “wrong” in the mental sense as well i.e., what we refer to as transgender, where someone with the body of one gender but the mind of a different gender? Do you believe that if this happens, the person should just deal with it with no recourse? Do you think the government has the right to step in and demand that they stay the gender they were born with and to hell with their mental health?
5. America’s forefathers may or may not have prayed to God but the Constitution was written SPECIFICALLY to allow for other religions without discrimination. This includes the right to not practice or practice a religion other than Christianity.
In closing, you left out what I believe is one of the most sacred passages in the Bible or any other holy text from any religion, Matthew 7:1-3. The exact wording varies depending on the version of the Bible being referenced, but here it is from KJV and I’m sure you can find it in whatever Bible your have to reference:
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
