ROTARY News:

Los Alamos Arts Council Vice President Steve Bublitz recently spoke at the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting, describing the plans and preparations to put Los Alamos in the Guinness Book of World Records for “the most pumpkins carved at one time”.

As Bublitz explained, the current record holder is our New Mexico neighbor Rio Rancho, with just over 1,000 carved at one time. Our Los Alamos attempt will involve 1,300 pumpkins, each one meeting the rigid standard of weighing at least 24.25 pounds. Every participant, who must be at least 10 years old, may register for $5 at CB FOX or through the Arts Council. The $5 fee includes the pumpkin and a carving kit.

Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2:45 p.m., the event will be staged along Central Avenue, from the library to the municipal building, with participants entering at the Fuller Lodge lawn where they will be given a wristband for entry. Participants will be given ample time to de-seed their pumpkins; designated stewards will make sure each person spends at least five minutes carving the required eyes, nose, and mouth.

Teams are welcome, and there are ample opportunities to volunteer as stewards, monitors, and at the entrance.

Whether Los Alamos sets the record or not, Bublitz stressed that this is an event with emphasis on fun and the pleasures of spending time together as a community. For more details, contact the Arts Council at www.losalamosartscouncil.org, 505.663.0477.
