New Mexico Immigrant Law Center:ALBUQUERQUE ― The New Mexico Immigrant Law Center (NMILC) has announced support of the youth-led global climate strike and backs movement leaders in urging governments to declare a climate emergency.
This undertaking Sept. 20-27, calls for direct action in order to maintain a habitable and sustainable world for all.
We, at NMILC, cannot ignore the global trends of climate change that affect the work we do every day. According to the United Nations, climate refugees are estimated to reach one billion by 2050, which is why we must take immediate action now to hold elected representatives and ourselves accountable.
As part of our commitment to justice, we call on leaders to address climate issues by supporting revolutionary and anti-oppressive solutions to an extraordinary crisis we face today.
We understand that we face a moral crisis that must be addressed while prioritizing indigenous and black communities in order to create a more equitable world.
We must uplift and support each other in our intertwined struggles and remember that border walls and xenophobic policies are not solutions for collective liberation.
“The federal government’s current immigration policy of turning away migrants who are fleeing poverty and violence is short-sighted and doesn’t take into account the very real impact that climate change is having across the world,” NMILC Associate Director Adriel Orozco said. “Government-officials, whether they be local, state, or federal, need to demand a radical re-envisioning of how we address migrants uprooted from their communities due to climate change.”
NMILC’s mission is to advance justice and equity by empowering low-income immigrant communities through collaborative legal services, advocacy, and education.
