This week, the senior center once again salutes volunteers. This time, the spotlight shines on all LARSO volunteers, with a special salute for one.

About two weeks ago, we held our annual training for the volunteers who make the Betty Ehart Senior Center and the White Rock Senior Center hum! Did you know there are about 70 overall?

If people did not volunteer, we would not be able to operate as well as we do each day. They assist with everything from helping in the dining rooms, to delivering meals to our frail elderly, answering phones, teaching classes and so much more.

I could write an entire column just about the volunteers who help drive people to doctor’s appointments. Don’t worry, I will write an entire column about that in the very near future.

We have volunteers who visit and chat with people, help teach others to read and play games and do puzzles. We do have a favorite volunteer and that is Rusty our therapy dog. His mom Cathy knows that Rusty stops traffic each time he comes by. We’d love it if every day was National Dog Day, or if we could make him a fulltime employee.

Another spotlight for this week is the White Rock Senior Center’s Romayne Betts. The most important thing to know is that our staff loves her. Her list of volunteer work is long and distinguished, from baking to volunteering. She’s a whiz in the kitchen and has volunteered for the fish fry and car show many, many years.

Romayne, is described as conscientious, hardworking, dedicated, and a loyal volunteer to the WRSC. She is on the illustrious team known there as the Boss of the Week (BOW) and a member of the Steering Committee. She adds to the heart and soul of the ambiance that is White Rock. She is heralded as a great friend and one that is a friend to all.

I was first introduced to Romayne as being a wonderful baker, who does so weekly for Jack’s Tall Tales group on Thursday nights. She heads up the WRSC monthly birthday celebrations, along with pals Jan Barber and Marcella Lockhart, among others. She is known to bake a great deal of birthday cakes and coordinates the monthly White Rock potlucks. Rumor has it that this is an additional location where her sweet treats and disposition can be found.
