NMSP News:
TAOS – At approximately 4:19 p.m. Saturday, March 14, a New Mexico State Police Officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black two door passenger vehicle on N.M. 291 in Española.
The vehicle fled and a pursuit was initiated.
The suspect driver made a u-turn on N.M. 291, and then headed northbound on N.M. 68, where a NMSP supervisor terminated the pursuit due to road conditions and traffic.
NMSP dispatch advised officers the vehicle license plate was stolen.
Another NMSP officer was patrolling on N.M. 68 near mile marker 14, when he heard about the pursuit. The officer observed the suspect vehicle that officers pursued earlier passing other vehicles in a no passing zone.
The officer was given authorization to re-engage the pursuit. During the pursuit, tire deflation devices were deployed and at one point a NMSP officer fired at least one round from his department issued firearm.
Officers performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) bringing the pursuit to an end on N.M. 68 near mile marker 41. The suspect vehicle came to rest on its roof. The suspect brandished a firearm and officers fired rounds from their department issued firearms striking the suspect.
Emergency aid was rendered to the suspect on scene. He was transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, where he later died from his injuries.
The NMSP Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate the incident. The identification of the male suspect and officers will not be released by the NMSP at this time. No officers were injured during the incident. This information is preliminary, and the investigation is still active and ongoing.
