With the ever so cautious relaxation of essential business rules under Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s April 30 emergency order in force, the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club will be re-opening the ranges in Rendija Canyon under strict conditions consistent with the Governor’s new order effective Tuesday, May 12.

While the range could always be thought of as an “essential business” since law enforcement including the Los Alamos Police Department regularly uses it for training, the Board considered it inappropriate to open the range to all members given the uncertainties of the moment and the need to ensure we as a club were not encouraging risky behavior that might lead to transmission of the virus between club members, their families, loved ones and members of their communities.

Therefore, over the last week, club board members and club volunteers hammered out a set of COVID-19 consistent re-opening restrictions on club use that must be followed by members to ensure social distancing and personal hygiene while using club facilities.

The rules, analogous to Col. Jeff Cooper’s well established “Four Rules” of firearm safety, ensure COVID-19 safety and will be posted at each range to ensure that all club members are apprised of the limits of the re-opening.

All ranges have likewise been marked to ensure social distancing and the club has established a reservation system that must be used for members to register for time on the range in order to ensure that attendance numbers at each range are kept under controls.

An email blast was sent out to club members to advise them of the re-opening as well as sending them the full list of “new rules” that will be in force during the Governor’s emergency orders.

In addition to existing members, we wish to welcome any new residents of the community as well as existing community members who may be interested in engaging in the shooting sports of trap, skeet, pistol, rifle and archery, in all of their various incarnations, and advise them that we are back in business, albeit in a limited manner.

The club website is open for business (https:////www.la-sc.org/ ) and those who wish to join the club or contact existing members to arrange a visit are encouraged to do so.
