Santa Fe Animal Shelter News:
One positive side of the stay at home order is that more people are adopting or fostering pets.
But with training facilities closed, how do you get your pup the training it might need?
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter will begin training classes virtually starting May 31, with their first online class aimed at puppies.
“Puppies go through critical learning stages between 2 months and 5 months old and again in their adolescent years,” said Murad Kirdar, shelter public relations officer. “Missing those windows of learning is detrimental to your puppy’s development.”
Whether you’re training your new puppy or teaching your old dog new tricks, experts agree that sooner is better. Kirdar said adopters who have recently adopted a puppy can attend one of two digital puppy classes that will be held online via Zoom. The cost is $200 for six, one-hour courses, and there is a 50 percent off special if you adopted from any animal shelter.
The classes will focus on puppy basic good manners, including sitting, waiting, paying attention, walking on a leash, and more.
“The best part of a virtual training class is that it’s convenient, safe, and you are doing it from the comfort of your home,” Kirdar said. For more information about online puppy classes, visit bit.ly/sfastraining
Pints for Pups Fundraiser Moves to Online
COVID-19 has impacted every single one of us from our families, small businesses, and community organizations which have been affected by this novel virus. Back Road Pizza is teaming up with Odell Brewery Co. to host an online edition of Pints for Pups to raise needed funds for the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. The shelter has continued its essential work of caring for Santa Fe’s abandoned, injured, and homeless animals during the pandemic, but more funds are necessary to maintain the day to day operations.
“We have been open and saving every animal that comes through our doors, but it’s costly,” Kirdar said. “We have to get creative with our fundraising efforts, and the team at Back Road Pizza is stepping up as a community partner.”
Saturday, May 23, Back Road Pizza will offer custom pint glasses, pizza, raffle prizes and more online at backroadpizza.com or by calling 505.955.9055, all while providing no contact curbside service and pickup.
“Our Pints for Pups event is our favorite fundraising event of the year. We have been holding off to see if we could host it in person, but that seems unlikely right now,” said Piper Kapin, owner of Back Road Pizza. “Many of us are looking for ways (from a distance of course) to help, and we thought this would be a fun way for folks to chip in and have nice cold pint waiting for them when we open!”
Raffle items will include Back Road Pizza gift cards, hats, shirts, doggie gift baskets and merchandise from Odell Brewery and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.
“We’re grateful if everyone can support the pups and the Shelter–and we can’t wait to open up for dining in so we can fill those Pints for Pups Glass for you with a cold Odell (with valid ID of course),” Kapin said.
Back Road Pizza is at 1807 2nd Street in Santa Fe.
