LAAC News:

Los Alamos Arts Council announces its 2020 Scarecrow Contest. To make MainStreet and the Creative District look as festive for as much of October as possible, Scarecrows will be placed on display Saturday, Oct. 10.

This year, LAAC requests that all Scarecrows fit within the theme of Movie Monsters. Scarecrows will take their inspiration from all types of movie monsters, which can include, for example, Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man. Or inspiration can come from the more contemporary movie monsters, such as Gremlins, Monsters Inc., or the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man.

Keep in mind that this is a community/family-friendly event, and Scarecrows should not be overly gruesome or violent.

Applications are now available and may be download here, or picked up at Fuller Lodge Art Center (FLAC), 2132 Central Ave. Completed applications are accepted at the front desk of Fuller Lodge Art Center through Oct. 9, along with the entry fee of $20 (payable by cash or check made out to Los Alamos Arts Council).

FLAC is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Applications also will be accepted 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10, when Scarecrows are brought for Pole Assignment.

Poles assignments will be made from the Fuller Lodge Art Center courtyard (weather permitting). Scarecrows cannot be dropped off at any location before Oct. 10. If unable to attend the pole assignment window, contact the Arts Council office at 505.663.0477 or laarts@rt66.com to make arrangement.

Scarecrows as a part of Halloweekend

Community members are invited to start voting for “Fan Favorite” Oct. 10 through Oct. 31 at Fuller Lodge Art Center or online. Online Voting will be available by 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10. The winning entry in “Fan Favorite” as well as four others, will each receive $70 in Chamber Checks — sponsored by Los Alamos MainStreet and the Creative District — and redeemable at dozens of local businesses. Official Judges from multiple local organizations will be looking at all Scarecrows, and giving points for originality, creativity, and construction. Announcement of the winners will be at 6 pm, via phone calls to the winners, as well as on Facebook, Instagram and here on our webpage!

Scarecrows will be on display Oct. 10 through Nov. 1 for the community to enjoy.

Scarecrow Contest Background:

In collaboration with the Mainstreet and Creative District Office, Los Alamos Arts Council brings a bit of autumn fun to downtown Los Alamos every year by organizing the annual Scarecrow Contest.  Since 2001, scarecrows made by local businesses, clubs, organizations, schools, families, and individuals have graced the walkway lamps along Central Avenue during the week before Halloween, and up to Nov. 1.
