Dedication Of Lizard Art Sculptures At Nature Center Aug. 28

Artist Richard Swenson

COUNTY News:

In late 2018, the Art in Public Places Board (APP) received an offer from local artist Richard Swenson to donate two metal sculptures of a large and small lizard; depicting adult and baby, with a recommendation that they be placed on the exterior of the Los Alamos Nature Center building.

The APP board spoke with representatives at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), the operators of the Nature Center, and PEEC strongly supported both the donation and the proposed location.

In June of 2020, during the pandemic, Los Alamos County installed the new art pieces, however, was not able to celebrate the new addition due to the pandemic.

APP announces that they will be hosting an art dedication ceremony 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, in conjunction with the Bear Festival at the Los Alamos Nature Center.

Swenson and his wife will be present for the event.  Swenson’s metal sculptures are very popular with residents and visitors to Los Alamos County and his artwork can be seen at various locations in Los Alamos and White Rock.
