County Launches Search For Public Works Director

Los Alamos County is recruiting for a new public works director position in response to former Public Works Director Anne Laurent being promoted to deputy county manager.

The position opened Oct. 28 and has a closing date of Dec. 1.

Los Alamos County seeks a customer focused leader that is innovative, proactive and results oriented, to serve as the next public works director. This individual will be part of the County’s senior management team reporting to the deputy county manager.

The new director will have experience with program planning and evaluation, as well as budget and financial management. The director is responsible for the development of the department’s budget for delivery to the county manager and will help monitor and administer the budget to assure the financial wellbeing of the department.

The Public Works Dept. is comprised of 144 fulltime employees working within nine divisions:

  • Engineering & Project Management;
  • Facilities;
  • Custodial;
  • Fleet;
  • Traffic & Streets;
  • Transit;
  • Environmental Services;
  • Airport; and
  • Administration.

The department serves as the staff liaison to the Transportation and Environmental Sustainability Boards.

“A profound understanding of delivering effective services to the citizens of Los Alamos County is vital as the person in this position has considerable public contact,” Deputy County Manager Linda Matteson said. “The ideal candidate will be a strategic and innovative professional with the ability to develop creative yet practical solutions to complex current and long-range issues.”

Several of the near-term projects that the Public Works Department will tackle include:

  • Golf Course Improvements;
  • Leisure Lagoon Completion;
  • Women’s Army Corps (WAC) Dormitory Renovations;
  • New community recreation centers; and
  • Transportation infrastructure projects such as the N.M. 4-East Jemez Road Intersection Improvements (a DOE-led project) and the Urban Multiuse Trail (Phases I & II).

The public works director position is an exempt position with a salary range of $116,710–$172,044.84. The position will close Dec. 1, 2021.
