The tree skirt made by members and friends of the Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guild that was displayed in Washington, D.C. for Christmas 2019 is on display in Los Alamos for Christmas 2021.
The 12-foot diameter quilt was designed, pieced and quilted by a team of quilters. It was part of 75 quilts and 10,000 ornaments made across New Mexico for display in various DC buildings. All of the trees for 2019 were harvested from the Carson National Forest.
The design of the quilt features New Mexico customs and traditions of the many cultures of New Mexico. Images of chiles, the Senora de Guadalupe, cowboys, Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), pueblos, hot air balloons, and wildlife are among the many appliques and patches that can be seen on the quilt. The backgrounds of White Sands, mountains, mesas, forests, and deserts reflect the many environments that are found in New Mexico.
The tree skirt quilt was displayed in the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Building in December 2019. Two of the quilters, Micki Taylor and Zena Thomas, were able to see the tree skirt on display in Washington, D.C.
This year’s display is in the lobby of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building at 1000 Central Ave.
In addition to Taylor and Thomas, the team of quilters included Roberta Day Idzorek, Ann Hayes, Deb McLin, Julia Goen, Karen Harrington and Marian Kirchner. Nicole Dunn of Dunn Quilting shared her studio and use of her long-arm machine for the project.
The project was truly a labor of love. The Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guilt is proud to have the quilt on display this year for all of Los Alamos to see.
