Santa Fe Opera Guild Presents ‘Virtual Vivace Book Club: Carmen’ March 21

SFOG News:

Santa Fe Opera Guild (SFOG) Presents ‘Virtual Vivace Book Club: Carmen’ from 6-7:30 p.m. (Check-in at 5:50 p.m.) Monday, March 21 virtually on Zoom.

Special Guests include Virginia Browning and Maestro Joe Illick and the moderator will be Bernadette Snider.

The inspiration for the opera which will be performed in the Santa Fe Opera’s 2022 season is the novella, Carmen by the French writer, Prosper Mérimée. The opera diverges from the original story in several ways: narration, characters, and plot. We will examine the differences as the novella is the source material for the opera and bring attention to works like Alexander Pushkin’s poem The Gypsies.

Santa Fe Opera Guild express’s that they are fortunate to have Virginia (Gina) Browning and maestro Joe Illick as their guests and co-facilitators. Their participation will add immensely to the discussion of Merimee’s novella as they bring the artistic perspective of opera professionals.

Illick is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of Fort Worth Opera and former Artistic Director of Performance Santa Fe. Illick conducts leading orchestras worldwide. Browning is a soprano who has sung dozens of roles and hundreds of programs in opera houses and concert halls throughout the United States and Europe.
