SFNF News:
SANTA FE — This Saturday, June 11, is National Get Outdoors Day®, an annual event that encourages healthy, active outdoor fun by introducing kids and first-time participants to outdoor recreation close to home.
The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) encourages the celebration of National Get Outdoors Day but not on the national forest this year.
The Stage 3 closure order remains in effect, prohibiting public access to the entire 1.6 million acres of the SFNF due to active wildfires and extreme fire danger. Please seek alternate plans for recreation and forego visiting the national forest.
The SFNF continues to experience extreme fire danger attributed to record-breaking drought and prolonged hot, dry, windy weather. These extreme conditions are expected to persist until the forest receives significant moisture and conditions improve.
National Get Outdoors Day is one of four annual fee-free days recognized by the Forest Service and other federal agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Although the forest closure cancels the June 11 fee waiver for the SFNF this year, mark your calendars for the remaining fee waiver days for 2022 – National Public Lands Day Sept. 24 and Veterans Day Nov. 11.
