Come celebrate the life, habits, and diet of the New Mexico black bear at the iconic Los Alamos Bear Festival and feast at the Los Alamos Nature Center the weekend of Aug. 26-27.
Hosted by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and sponsored by Century Bank, this year’s Bear Festival will include Bears, Beers and Bites Friday, Aug. 26, followed by a full day of booths, games, and interactive resources for learning about living with black bears and other area wildlife Saturday, Aug. 27.
“This annual event is both fun and informative for kids of all ages,” Kelly Stewart said, with Los Alamos County’s Economic Development Division. “For any who are curious about our furriest neighbors—our beloved black bears—or other local wildlife and want to learn more about respecting this incredible species and living in harmony with our wildlife neighbors, we invite you to join the fun.”
Kicking off the event is a fan-favorite—Bears, Beers and Bites—in which participants will enjoy the experience of eating like a bear for the evening. With hors d’oeuvres from Jessica Roberts, Personal Caterer, diners will sample foods eaten by bears, as well as learn from a talk from Dr. Kathleen Ramsay. Attendees will also receive two drink tickets for beer or wine from Bathtub Row Brewing Coop. The event is zero-waste to focus on reducing waste and making it a better environment for us, local bears and the planet.
Registration is required for the event, and tickets are $30 for PEEC members and $40 for non-members.
Events continue Saturday with a full day of free bear-related fun. With local, statewide, and regional organizations, festival attendees will learn about keeping human and bear populations safe, as well as take part in scavenger hunts, games, and crafts.
