The LensicNews:

SANTA FE — The Lensic Performing Arts Center presents Martha Redbone’s Bone Hill—The Concert at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 21. A production by artist and activist Redbone, Bone Hill is a dramatic musical work that chronicles the stories of four generations of her Appalachain Mountain Cherokee family.

In conjunction with the mainstage performance, Redbone will participate in education and outreach events with Santa Fe Public Schools and IAIA, the Institute of American Indian Arts.

A celebration of family, survival, and resilience, Bone Hill tells the story of what it means to hold onto culture, land, and roots. The lively and thought-provoking concert features a cast of eight performing wide-ranging music, from traditional Cherokee chants and lullabies to bluegrass, blues, gospel, jazz and R&B.

Martha Redbone has been making waves in the American Roots music scene for decades. Inheriting the powerful vocal range of her gospel-singing African American father and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of the genre. With songs and storytelling that share her life experience as a Native and Black woman and mother in the new millennium, Redbone gives voice to issues of social justice, bridging traditions from past to present, connecting cultures, and celebrating the human spirit.

Tickets ($25-$35) are available at lensic.org, 505.988.1234 or in-person at 211 W. San Francisco St.

A pre-performance talk with Redbone and KSFR’s Eric Davis begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free to all ticket holders.

Education & Outreach

Students from Santa Fe Public Schools will attend a free matinee of the concert Oct. 21, part of the Lensic’s involvement in the school district’s PASS (Performing Arts for Student Success) program. In addition, Redbone will teach a masterclass with students at IAIA. On the night of the performance, Redbone will participate in Program Notes, the Lensic’s pre-performance series with Eric Davis, content director of local radio station KSFR.
