Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.

Hilltop House Demolition 

All Rite Construction, under contract with Los Alamos County Public Works, has begun demolition of the former Hilltop House hotel and gas station, located at the N.M. 502/Central Avenue roundabout. Regular truck traffic will be entering and exiting the project site throughout the duration of the project.

Motorists traveling westbound on N.M. 502 will follow a short detour on Central Avenue and use Knecht Street or 15th  Street to access Trinity Drive. While motorists traveling eastbound can use Knecht or 15th  to access Central Avenue then continue to N.M. 502. Sidewalks on the north side of Trinity Drive between the roundabout and DP Road also will be closed for pedestrian safety. Access to businesses and DP Road will be maintained.

Motorists approaching the roundabout from all directions should use caution and pay attention to roadway signs approaching and within the work zone.

Demolition is expected to be completed by January 2023, weather permitting.

Canyon Road Reconstruction

TLC Plumbing and Utility, under contract with the Los Alamos County Public Works Department has completed Phase 1 of the three-phase project on Central Ave and Canyon Road.

The final surface of pavement placement continues from 39th Street to Oppenheimer Dr.  

The eastbound lane of Canyon will be partially opened to one-way traffic during the week of Oct. 24. Access to the Aquatic Center and Canyon Village Apartments, LAPS Staff Parking Lot and IHM Catholic Church will be accessible from the west via Diamond Dr and Canyon through the work zone.

Partial sidewalk closures are posted with detour signage to keep pedestrians clear of the work zone.

Atomic City Transit and Park and Ride staff have adjusted bus routes accordingly. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained. 

Completion of the project is scheduled at the end of October 2022.

Construction hours are 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. To stay on-schedule and avoid weather delays, crews will have an earlier start time. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution around construction activities, avoid entering the work zone and obey all work zone signage. Motorists are asked to utilize Trinity Drive as much as possible as the main thoroughfare between neighborhoods and the downtown area. 

The Tennis Courts on Canyon will remain closed, as the area is being utilized as an equipment staging area for the duration of the project.

Sherwood Boulevard and Aztec Avenue

Star Paving Company continues road and drainage improvements on Sherwood Boulevard between Piedra Loop and Aztec Avenue.

Sherwood continues to be closed to through traffic from north of Aztec to Grand Canyon Drive with grading of the roadway underway in preparation for paving. Residents on Sherwood will be required to enter and exit Sherwood from north during this time.

Traffic devices and detour signs are in place to help motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians navigate around the work zone.

Vehicle access is limited to those who reside in the immediate work area and mail delivery, emergency services, trash, and recycling collection. For safety of the traveling public, residents are asked not to remove or relocate traffic control devices, signs, and barricades. Area residents who may have special access needs are asked to contact the Public Works Department.

Work schedules are subject to change pending weather conditions and any material shipping delays. Work Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

A contractor working for Qualcon Builders will continue construction of the remaining sidewalk sections, replacement of broken curb and gutter, street light installation and clean up and grading along the sides of DP Road. These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway periodically restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagger. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

This work on DP Road is related to the Canyon Walk Apartments and The Bluffs senior housing (under construction). All remaining construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are now expected to be completed by the end of October 2022 (weather permitting).

Traffic & Streets Projects:

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Traffic & Streets Division staff.

Vegetation Control in Los Alamos

Crews will be mowing vegetation in the Townsite in several locations Oct. 24-28. They will begin at 8 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. daily. There may be intermittent sidewalk closures, please watch for crews and traffic control devices.

Asphalt Patching on Fairway Drive

Crews will be patching sections of asphalt on Fairway Dr Wednesday, Oct. 26 beginning at 8 a.m. There will be a flagging operation in place.

Central Ave Road Closure for Night Work Asphalt Patching Continues

A road closure will occur on two nights on Central Avenue, between 15th Street and Oppenheimer Drive at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 until 5 a.m. Oct. 27 and again at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 until at 5 a.m. Oct. 28. Crews will be patching sections of asphalt along this route. The road closure is scheduled overnight to limit disruption to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Pedestrian and vehicle traffic should approach slowly and follow all detour signs.

During the closure, pedestrian and vehicle traffic will need to watch for signs detouring traffic to Trinity Drive at 15th, Canyon Road at 15th, Trinity at Oppenheimer, and to Canyon at the intersection of Canyon/Central.

Utilities Projects:

Sewer Lines to be Replaced on Sombrillo Court

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is continuing a sewer line replacement project on Sombrillo Court with excavation.

The entrance to Sombrillo Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will be narrowed, while installing a new manhole in the area. Drivers will still be able to enter and exit but are asked to drive slowly and cautiously while entering and exiting the parking lot. It has not yet been determined how long the manhole installation should take.

The installation of the new sewer line is expected to take under 30 days. It will occur to the side of the Sombrillo Ct. cul-de-sac so traffic won’t be impeded.

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.

Trick-or-Trot 5K Run

Barranca Mesa Elementary School PTO will host its annual Trick-or-Trot 5K Fundraiser Event 8:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 29. Road closures will be in place at Barranca at Loma Del Escolar and at Camino Encantada at Tecolote Street.

The race will begin at Barranca Elementary School and proceed to Camino Encantada to Tecolote, turn back, and return to the school for the 1K Run, and continue to Cascabel, to La Cueva, to Barranca, to Los Pueblos, to Navajo Road, back to Barranca, and return to the school for the 5K.

Camino Medio Sidewalk Closure

Cablecom, LLC will be working with Two Men One Cable to perform an underground bore on Camino Medio. They will need to close the sidewalk temporarily on the south side of Camino Medio. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the north side of Camino Medio.

Work will begin Oct. 24, and  should be completed by Oct. 28. Crews will begin at 9 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. daily. For concerns regarding this project contact Adrian Rivas, Cablecom, LLC. at 505.225.5967.

Trick or Treat on MainStreet

The annual Trick or Treat on MainStreet is 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 on Central Avenue between 15th and 20th streets. A road closure will be in place at both streets including any side street access.
