LAPS News:

The Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) Board met Tuesday, Nov. 8 in the School Boardroom and on Zoom.

School Board President Melanie Colgan opened the meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of former Los Alamos High School (LAHS) librarian Ken Holmes and 2020 LAHS alumnus Mikey Aslam.

The School Board then recognized LAPS Facilities Director Tommy Castillo and the Facilities team recently awarded Ben Lujan Maintenance Achievement Awards.

LAHS Student Body Vice President Aberra Hettinga provided an update on activities at LAHS centered around the month of giving, including a food drive, letters to service members and Toppers helping Toppers.

The School Board adopted a resolution in support of Native American Heritage Month presented by Superintendent Jose Delfin. Activities during the month include Rock Your Mocs Nov. 16 and a screening of the film “However Wide the Sky Places of Power” Nov. 29 at the SALA Event Center.

Dr. Delfin also presented a certificate in recognition of Native American Heritage Month to members of the Native American Parent Council (NAPAC). Members Santina Shije and Jesse Davila were present to accept the certificate. NAPAC President Darren Harvey and NAPAC Secretary Karmela Martinez attended via Zoom.

School Board members voted 4-1 to accept Option D as the new Voting Redistricting map for Los Alamos Public Schools. This affects voting for school board representation and not school attendance zones.

The School Board heard a proposal by John F. Kennedy of JFKLAW, LLC, on a policy services program, which is a national system for coding and retrieving policy, developed by the National School Boards Association. This service reduces the amount of time devoted to review and documentation of state and federal compliance issues.

The School Board also heard more information about the proposed strategic plan update and the consideration of a collaboration between Robyn Jackson and Bill Wadt to complete this project. School board members have requested to see a quote and timeline before making a final decision.

The next School Board meeting is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 at Barranca Mesa Elementary School.
