MAPR To Be Featured In 2023 National Parks Stamp Series

COUNTY News:

Manhattan Project National Historical Park (MAPR)—which has locations in Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Hanford, Wash.—will be featured as part of the 2023 Passport to your National Parks® Stamp Set. Taking the center location as the national stamp, Manhattan Project National Historical Park is one of ten national parks included in the collection.

As the park celebrates its seventh year, its place in the stamp series highlights the historical significance of the park, which is known for its role in the groundbreaking science that put Los Alamos on the map as a hub for some of the leading scientists in the world—a practice that continues today at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. From 1942 to 1946, the top-secret Manhattan Project, the Los Alamos MAPR site was utilized for the building of atomic weapons that ended World War II. Today, the park offers historical tours, opportunities to view the homes of scientists working on the project, interactive museums, spy tours and much more.

“We’re thrilled to see Manhattan Project National Historical Park receive such widespread attention through the National Parks Stamp Series,” said Kelly Stewart with Los Alamos County’s Economic Development Division. “We invite all to visit, tour, and learn about the science that shaped our nation in a pivotal time. Whether you’re visiting Los Alamos to see the birthplace of atomic weapons—or catch a sneak peek behind the scenes of the upcoming film, Oppenheimer—the variety of tours and museums available provides an in-depth and experiential view of the discoveries of the Secret City.”

In addition to Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Los Alamos is the Gateway to Three National Parks. In one visit, park enthusiasts can also explore nearby Bandelier National Monument and Valles Caldera National Preserve.
