Daily Postcard: A bird bander holds a small bird Sunday at Bandelier National Monument. Bandelier is hiring a lead bird bander for the park’s 2023 banding program, one of a number of long-term research and monitoring programs at the Monument. The bird banding program includes both Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) and migratory banding stations, which have been monitored for 18 years. The position’s primary responsibility will be to serve as the lead bird bander. Other duties of the position may include conducting avian point counts; performing Pinyon Jay surveys; monitoring Peregrine Falcon nests; assisting with bat surveys, and leading birding walks for visitors.
